Wallpaper ...

I'd like to take a few minutes to talk about wallpaper.

We've all seen the books, most of us have probably even picked them up and flipped through one or two - oohing & ahhing over all the  delicious patterns, colors & textures.

Yup, I'd wager that at some point in time we've all been tempted by one pretty little pattern or another ...

To me, putting up wallpaper is kinda like getting a perm for your house  -

It seems like most people, at some point in their life, succumb to the temptation and put it up  thinking that it would be a nice change- something new & different.

But, like almost every perm I've ever known, wallpaper is often a bad choice because everyone see's it , there's no hiding from it, and it stick's around for a long, long, long time ...

In fact, I'd go so far as to say I think wallpaper should be outlawed or at the very minimum - require a home decorator's license or some other kind of certification prior to it's installation to make sure that the home decorator is fully aware of the extreme challenge of removing the 'said' wallpaper from your house when you tire of it (and you will).  PS: painting over top of the wallpaper or selling your house & moving is not a form of 'ethical' wallpaper removal.

So let me make myself perfectly clear ... I HATE WALLPAPER!!   Loathe it.  Despise it.

And listen, I don't want to insult any wallpaper lovers out there - to each his own - but as for me & my house, we hate it.   Hate, hate, hate it.

Oh sure, it might look cute when you are putting it up, for example, I am sure that someone thought this Mickey Mouse border would look super cute in my upstairs bathroom ...

but now that it's time to come down - well, that's another story altogether.  And in my experience, it's never a pretty one.

NEVER ...

I think someone glued this stuff up with crazy glue because we've tried every trick in the book and it just won't come down.  Cockroaches & wallpaper borders - that's all that's will be left around after a nuclear explosion ...

We (and by we, I mean Mike) sprayed with water, fabric softener, DIF wallpaper remover and scored the heck out of it with a paper tiger (and if you know what a paper tiger is then I know you've been in these shoes before) and it still won't come off!

The wall board will need to be rebuilt (as in spackled, sanded & primed) before we can even think about painting the bathroom.

Oh, and if you hear any loud disturbing swear words as your reading this post ...

They are probably coming from Mike as he struggles for the 3d night in a row to remove it (this is not his happy face) and I think he'll be at it tomorrow night too!

No wonder the Handyman wanted $32.00/hour for wallpaper removal - Mike thought it was too expensive and that's why he has chosen to do the dirty deed himself, however I think it was probably a fair wage for the job  ...

Holy wallpaper border batman - looks what's beautifying our master bath ...

Our Realtor says it has to go - Hm-mm, yeah - (thinkin' thinkin'), well ..... after some discussion we told him we'd paint over it but there was no way  we're removing it (obviously we haven't taken the proper certification classes yet).

I shutter to think how many houses in the world right now are sporting wallpaper - and all I can say is that when I'm looking at houses in San Diego - I will not buy one with any wallpaper in it - if they won't take it down - then NO DEAL
